Depending on the need of the patient, an appropriate face lift needs to be performed to obtain optimal results. Mini face lift or short scar face lift is usually tailored for the patient who has lower face laxity and marionette lines at the corner of the lips but minimal aging around the eyes or minimal problems with neck skin.
Short scar as the name implies is a much shorter incision avoiding incision behind the ears and or into the scalp above the ear. The main goal is to lift the jowl area and create a more defined lower jaw line too. It does not address optimally the neck issue or around eye rejuvenation.
This procedure could be performed under light sedation or even local anesthesia, although light sedation is ideal due to less risks vs. general anesthesia. Recovery is fairly quick and the patient can return to work in just few days.
Regular face lift is usually reserved for more tightening of the face neck and forehead and around the eyes. It can extend from side of the scalp into the front of the earlobe and to the back of the ear into the hairline behind the ear. There is more extensive de-gloving of the skin addressing both the loose neck and face skin. The recovery is much longer, the bruising is much more significant and usually general anesthesia is required, but can be done with sedation. This type of face lift may involve tucking of the neck muscle as a separate procedure to obtain close to optimal results.
A consultation with the surgeon will determine what type of face lift you benefit from. There is always possibility of revision in all aspect of cosmetic surgery including face lift procedure.
